Have you lost your glow? Maybe you have yet not reached personal fulfillment, or just lost track for a little while? It happens to all of us, and the most important is WHEN and HOW you recover from it.

For starters, this post is going to be very simple and hopefully on the shorter side, I tend to keep writing and writing when I get started. My genuine purpose is to motivate you and show you that no matter how hard life can be sometimes, there is a way to get yourself back up again, and it will make you better and stronger than ever before.

The saying: “What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger” is not just *BS*. I have experienced “this” numerous times and can back up this saying to 100 percent.

Let Me Share Some of My Difficult Times When I Had to Struggle to Rise Back Up Again:

1. I was on my highest peak as a professional dancer. I was rehearsing my dance routine when I mis-steped and ripped off my ACL in the right knee.

Everything went totally black and I died a little, at least so it felt. My dreams got crushed in a matter of seconds from one little step that went wrong, so wrong!

I was told I needed surgery to replace my ACL and rehabilitation for about 11 to 12 months. My doctor also told me that my dance career was over and that I had to find another passion, or interest. I was devastated.

I love dancing with all my heart. It was, and still is, my way of expressing myself. I think we all have to have an outlet somewhere and dancing is my happy place, where I can leave all troubles behind for a while and be creative.

♦ 2. I had rehabilitated my knee for 11 months and was back in the dance studio despite my doctors judgment. I was happy rehearsing for a dance performance, but I felt that something was not right. I had severe stomach pain.

I was used to stomach pain and feeling a bit nauseous, since I struggled with IBS – Irritated Bowls Syndrome – that I got from a vacation in Thailand, most likely from getting contaminated water into my system. I ate a salad that was rinsed in their water.

After many hours and examinations later at the hospital, they noticed I had an inflamed appendix. The capacity of surgery rooms and doctors were limited that day, so I had to wait for 12 hours pumped with morphine before they took me into surgery.

After about the 7th hour I could feel my appendix burst inside my stomach. I felt how pus was rinsing out in my body. Strangely enough the horrific, trembling, pain subsided a little and I could relax from being tensed like a brick wall. What I did not know was that now every minute was a threat to my life.

I woke up by a middle age male doctor saying: “Honey, you should be lucky to be alive. Your stomach was so infected with pus that we thought we were going to loose you”.

It took me months to fully recover. Some of the pus did not want to leave my intestines and gave me severe stomach cramps. I had to go back to the hospital for examinations several times.

♦ 3. About six months later I was at a another dance rehearsal, but with my own dance crew, G-fiction (look us up here and watch a dance clip if you want). I mis-steped once again, and felt my kneecap pop back and forth. I torn my second ACL. This time the ACL of my left knee.

Can you imagine all the dark thoughts and feelings rushing through my body at this point? After finally being able to recover from my first ACL, AND my burst appendix, this happened!! So it went off to the hospital again. They told me I was becoming a regular and that it was not good considering my relatively young age. I was 33 at the time.

♦ 4. About another 7 months later, me and my co-worker and dear friend Mia, went on a vacation to Cyprus. I started to feel sick after a couple of days and my throat became more and more sore. I did not want that to stop me while being on a nice, fun, vacation with my friend.

Make money online, start your own business with Wealthy Affiliate - Make a Living from Home in 2017I kept up on pain killers and fever reducers, but I did not feel well at all. After the 5th day I just had to go and see the doctor because I was in such pain I could hardly swallow.

The doctor gave me the diagnosis of a throat abscess – a severe degree of tonsillitis where an infected abscess full with pus has formed in your throat. The doctor had to put a needle down my throat while I was AWAKE and burst a hole in it!!

OMG that was horrible! He also gave me some kind of shot in my rear end to help with the infection. We never found out what he gave me because his English was so bad he could not explain. I was so lucky to not be alone through this, and I am truly grateful to my friend, Mia, that took care of me, and kept me company.

As you can imagine, the flight back home was horrible, but I recovered after a while.

♦ 5. Another 3 to 4 months go by (I cannot remember exactly) and I get another throat abscess, but much worse this time. I have never been so sick in my whole life. The pain was so excruciating that I rather would go through 5 burst appendixes’ than dealing with that pain. I could not swallow and was drawling laying over the sink.

I had high fever, so I could barely keep my head up. My dad, drove from Linkoping to Stockholm to pick me up and take me home to them. My mom soon realized that I had to go to the hospital and took me to Link0ping’s University Hospital. Thank God for my parents!

When arriving at the hospital I begged to be sedated and I did not care if I would ever wake up again. Normally, I am a person full of life that wants to live forever and ever like they say, but this pain was just too much to handle. I could not take it anymore.

Of course, they did not take me up on that. I later learned that if I would sleep and tilt my head to the left where my abscess was, I could suffocate and die. No wonder they were constantly running to check up on me during the night.

Again I was close to dying!

By now you are probably thinking that all this bad luck has to stop, that she had her share of it! Nope, the story goes on. No, my bad. Not a story because this is as real as it can be. This was my reality for some intense years of my life.

♦ 6. About a year later, I was going to Birmingham, England, to manage an exhibition for the company I used to work for as an international marketing consultant. The trip over there went well, but back home before landing in Copenhagen, Denmark, to switch flights, my head exploded and it felt like someone was stabbing my forehead with an ice pick.

My instant reaction was to hold my hand on my forehead, but the pain got even worse when touching it. The man sitting next to me noticed my agony and asked for the flight attendant. She told me to try and keep calm and hang in there, and that we were going to land in 20 minutes.

Let me tell you, it was the LONGEST 20 minutes of my life. When we landed and I was going to raise up from my seat I passed out.

Make money online, start your own business with Wealthy Affiliate - Make a Living from Home in 2017I woke up in an ambulance and they told me they were taking me to the hospital in Copenhagen for a check up. While there, they did a MRI of my head, but could not find any explanation to my sudden illness. They forbade me to fly, so after some hours at the airport, I took the train back to Stockholm, Sweden.

I had to be in bed with severe headache for days before it went away. Still with no explanation to why this happened.

♦ 7. After some months I had to go over to the U.K. again to help out at another exhibition. My boss asked me if I really was okey with going and if I was ready to fly again. I told him: “Yes, of course! What are the odds that this would happen again”.

Well, this time it happened on the way over to England already.

Another trip to the hospital and another MRI later, they could still not fully understand what was happening to me.

I was so embarrassed that I could not make it to Birmingham, and it felt like I had let my English co-workers down. I knew they needed my help.

It was not fun to return to the office and confess to my second incident. Even that my co-workers were only worried about me and glad that I was okey, I felt like a big failure. I could not even fly without a trip to the hospital.

After some more tests back home in Sweden, they noticed that I seemed to have a chronic blockage in my sinuses that probably was the reason to my pain, since it made it impossible for me to pressure equalize when the plane was landing. Often, air bubbles can get stuck and cause you tremendous pain if you cannot pressure equalize.

When Things Started Turning for the Better and I got Stronger than Ever Before

I was nervous when flying to Miami 3.5 years ago now, but I had treated my nose with cortisone spray for 2 weeks prior, to reduce the sinus blockage a little, and hopefully make it less painful to fly. About 30 minutes to landing I took some pain killers as well just in case.

It was painful, but it went a lot better this time, and I felt happy to have overcome my disadvantage.

What I want to say with this post is that the saying: “What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger” is very true!

Overcoming all this have made me stronger. A lot stronger even! I have learned that I have a will beyond this world to live – it is some tough wood in this body!

I am also much more humble to life itself, because it was close to be ripped off my feet two times. My stubbornness and eagerness to never fail have kept me going.  I rehabilitated my left knee for another 12 months, and three surgeries later with constructed ACL’s in both knees, I am still dancing.

Not on a daily basis anymore, since my left knee is still bothering me, but as a passionate hobby. I have even been able to continue performing on some shows as a background dancer to the amazing Latin singer, Nelson O Polanso, here in Miami, FL. You can check us out performing on American TV here.

If I can say so myself, not bad after everything I have been through! I am proud of the person I have become, who never looks back and stays in self pity.

I try to leave my struggles behind and look forward to the future with hope. Hope of something BETTER to come!

Although, like everyone else, I get bad days when I loose faith. In those situations it is important to surround yourself with people that can pull you back up and motivate you to get back on track again.

Omg your story sounds like a horror film! I feel so bad about everything you went through in life. It makes my struggles seem so small, although I do have much more time to go through horrible things in life since I just turned 23. Your strength and motivation is inspiring!

    • Stina Pettersson

      Hi Gabriela,

thank you so much for your kind, caring words, they really touched me! I certainly hope that you don’t have to experience any horrible happenings whatsoever in your life. No one deserves that! (Well, maybe animal and child abusers^^).

If I could make you feel that your struggles were less then, I have reached my goal with this post. My goal is to make people realize to never give up on life, and know that after a rainy day (or sometimes many) the sun will always shine on you again. Yes, it sucked big time when I was going through all this, but I am stronger now and I don’t take health for granted anymore. I’m happy to have overcome all that!

Promise me one thing, never stay quiet when you’re going through hard times. Talk with your dearest peeps in your life and let them ease the burden a bit. Or write about it and get wonderful surprises like this when you get support from people you don’t even know:-)

Thanks again Gabriela! You made my day!

All my best wishes to you and Happy Birthday in afterwards!

    Hi Stina!
Wow what struggles you have been through! To see that you can persevere after all that and keep going is very motivational for me. I have been through a lot myself and I have my days when I just want to stay in bed all day and do nothing. I always manage to pick myself up and get going though (Sometimes after a day or two lol). Wealthy Affiliates is an AMAZING community and I am so glad to have all the help and support from everyone.
Thank you for the motivation I received from reading your article and I wish you the best! 🙂

      Hi Chris,

Thanks so much for your kind best wishes! I’m very glad this post served its purpose and motivated you:-) I think we all have those days when we just want to stay in bed under the cover and not have to deal with life.

With life comes a lot of responsibility and demands. We have the responsibility to decide how to act and deal with things when unpleasant things happen. It is ok to take a moment to recover as long as we decide to keep fighting, beat all struggles and come out of it stronger. No one said that life was going to be easy. We have to create our own happiness and success, so it’s important to allow some time for sadness but to try and do the best of the situation. And YES, it’s great to have so many wonderful friends to help you recuperate even faster at Wealthy Affiliate!

Take care of yourself Chris and all the best, and success to you!
